Sun Son Tamsui Black Box Theatre
Located on the third floor of the Tamsui Arts Workshop, the Sun Son Tamsui Black Box Theatre was originally under the jurisdiction of the Tamsui Historic Site Museum. Sun Son Theatre applied for residency in 2017 and began operations in 2018.
The space serves primarily as a regular venue for Sun Son Theatre's small-scale productions, with an emphasis on the integrated performing arts — music, movement, and dance as one — and work drawn from diverse cultural traditions. Beyond performance, the space supports and nurtures artists in developing new work, and hosts participatory arts workshops open to the public. The vision is to create a place where Tamsui residents can walk to a performance and make arts a natural part of everyday life.
At the end of 2020, following the closure of Sun Son's former space at Bamboo Curtain Studio, the original Sun Son World Instruments Collection was relocated to Tamsui and integrated into the black box theatre.
Before
The third floor of the Arts Workshop was originally an exhibition space. Following Sun Son Theatre's residency, the space was transformed — through considerable time and investment — into a dedicated black box performance space.
2018-2020
Fitted with a black vinyl floor, basic lighting and sound equipment, the space became a base for three years of productions and performer development.
2021-
Following the closure of Sun Son's residency at Bamboo Curtain Studio, the Tamsui Black Box Theatre and the World Instruments Collection were merged into a combined space for performance and instrument display.
